LEGEND Catherine O’Hara On CANADA DAY

Very few people qualify as a Canadian national treasure quite as iconic LEGEND Catherine O’Hara. The Toronto-born actress, comedian and writer has been giving us endless reasons to be proud across a career that spans nearly 50 years.

I Am: Celine Dion

I Am: Celine Dion - Wellington OrbitSorry for the lack of updates, I’ve been trying to blog since Wednesday but I had a setback. So, Tuesday night, before going to bed, I watched this documentary… It’s pretty sad.

Céline Dion is a global superstar, a Canadian symbol and a Quebec idol. Born in Charlemagne, a small city 30 minutes away from Montreal, Céline Dion is an ambassador and role model for all Quebec acts.

Being a local hero, I follow Céline ‘s career since the 90s.

Although I have some of her albums and like some of her songs, I have other favourite artists. However, I love and admire Céline as a person. She comes from a very humble family, but fame and money never changed her.

So, I watched I am Céline Dion with great interest on Tuesday night and this documentary presents her as she is, without artifice. It give some highlights of Céline ‘s career and some real footage of her present…  Her battle with stiff person syndrome is nothing but moving.

Once again, Céline has given everything for her audience..

TRIBUTE To MONICA NARANJO

Mónica Naranjo: albums, songs, playlists | Listen on DeezerMonica Naranjo is a Spanish GODDESS, a vocal PRODIGY, a Diva, a LEGEND, an LGBTQ+ champion and I fell in love with her back in the 90s when she used to wear her iconic two tone hair colour.

She was 18 year-old  when she emigrated to Mexico looking for the opportunity Spain (her country) denied her.

At 19 Sony Music released her first album, which was a hit. She didn’t sound like any other pop artist, Monica’s voice was UNIQUE.

By age 22, this monumental woman with a MONUMENTAL VOICE released her second album and reached international success.

By the year 2000 (back to Spain with fame and glory) she had three successful albums. However, the third album, Minage (an homage to Italian legend Mina Mazzini) was her last personal work of that era.

Monica Naranjo - Puro Minage Remasterizado

Although her music videos are hot and her voice is great, Monica Naranjo is one of those singers that is better to see LIVE because she’s soooo extra!

Her 4th album was not a work of love but a commercial record imposed by Sony. At the time they wanted her to crossover and sing in English for the American market.

She hated the concept and the songs forced to sing, so she begun a legal battle.

Sonny banned her and she retired in the shadows for several years.

In 2008 without advertisements and totally unexpected, Tarantula, her 5th studio album, was released by Sony-BMG. It marked Monica’s HUGE comeback after 8 years out of the spotlight and a truce with the giant music company… Sony could not lose her.

However, this new Monica had nothing to do with the sexy femme fatale she used to be. Now in her 30’s her new image was dark, the image of someone who experienced the pains of life.

The first single, Europa (her memoir), was an EPIC hit

Monica released other albums after that.

Her music evolved over the decades as ageing. She went from catchy dance/pop songs, to dark melodramatic operatic rock tunes and ballads.

Yet, her voice and stage presence remain unbeatable!

And here she is, 2023, no longer a 19 yo girl, but a 50 year-old GODDESS!

Unlike the new singers, the older generation will give you face, vocals and talent.

Diva, Diva… VIVA la DIVA!

20 Minutes of Charles Schulz Drawing Peanuts Comics

This is wonderful: a collection of video clips of Charles Schulz drawing his iconic Peanuts comic strip — “everything I could find of Charles Schulz drawing his Peanuts characters” in the words of the compiler.

Unfortunately, I’m not highly educated. I’m merely a high school graduate. I studied art in a correspondence course because I was afraid to go to art school. I couldn’t see myself sitting in a room where everyone else in the room could draw much better than I and this way I was protected by drawing at home and simply mailing my drawings in and having them criticized.

I wish I had a better education but I think that my entire background made me well-suited for what I do. If I could write better than I can, perhaps I would have tried to become a novelist and I might have become a failure. If I could draw better than I can, I might have tried to become an illustrator or an artist and would have failed there. But my entire being seems to be just right for being a cartoonist.

TRIBUTE To KLAUS NOMI

Klaus Nomi – Welcome to my madness.Few pop stars have been quite as unique as the otherworldly maverick Klaus Nomi, who became the talk in late-1970s.

Klaus Sperber, known professionally as Klaus Nomi, was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona.

Born in the German state of Bavaria in 1944. In the 1960s, he worked as an usher at the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin where he sang for the other ushers and maintenance crew on stage in front of the fire curtain after performances. He also sang opera arias at the Berlin gay discothèque Kleist Casino

Klaus Nomi emigrated to New York City at the age of 28, doing bits of off-Broadway theater work and moonlighting as a pastry chef. By 1978, he immersed himself in the East Village performance art scene and got the first big feather in his cap when he performed an aria in a space suit at Irving Plaza’s New Wave Vaudeville series.

Nomi self-identified as an alien, and to all intents and purposes he looked like one.

Nomi further refined his onstage persona the following year, when he performed backup for David Bowie on Saturday Night Live. That aired December 15, 1979, and Bowie flanked by Klaus and fellow NYC performance artist (now legendary) Joey Arias performed three songs that ultimately marked a turning point in Bowie’s career.

New wave was the genre du jour, so Bowie was keeping up with the times. It was time to get weird(er), and Klaus’ eccentric aesthetic was perhaps the greatest entrée (and cosign) for Bowie into that world. It was a mutually beneficial relationship that lasted just one evening.

Klaus was enamoured with the giant plastic tux Bowie wore during the performance, and later made it his own.

The exposure also garnered him a record deal with Bowie’s label RCA

The cult singer rediscovered on TikTokKlaus NomiIMG_1363As for Bowie, he had a new muse, but the adoration would come from afar. Convinced that Bowie would deliver upon a loose promise to work together after their first and last time on stage, Klaus waited for his call… His phone never rang.

Still, Klaus Nomi went on to become his own brand.

twixnmix:“Joey Arias and Klaus Nomi photographed by Michael Halsband, 1980. ”

.

His formula was consistent, but not formulaic. Every song included dramatic multiples shift in octave, where Klaus would rise to extreme highs and lows, handling both effortlessly. The production on his songs was always heavily synthesized and theatrical.

That plastic suit became his signature attire, and he went on to release two albums, his 1981 eponymous debut and Simple Man the following year.

Toward the end of his short career, Klaus delved deeper into his operatic side, even switching up his attire to appear more theatrical. By the end of 1982, he was deteriorating due to AIDS.

His body was covered in lesions, so he would don a baroque-style collar to mask the sores on his neck. This performance of “Cold Song” (from Henry Purcell’s King Arthur) took place six months before he passed, during a European mini-tour.

He walked his frail body and tiny legs up the stairs to the microphone. He was near death with AIDS at a time of horrible stigma and he bravely sang his heart out.

That takes true bravery and courage to do.

He died on August 6 1983, making him one of the first celebrities to succumb to the disease. His ashes were dusted across New York City.

Don’t you wish you could have met Klaus and gotten his autograph? I know I do. This will have to do, until I find a way to hitch a ride on the TARDIS or something.

Klaus Nomi became a cult artist and inspiration of many other artists and fashion designers such as Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Bruno Pieters, etc.

Klaus is proof that you can become something amazing if you want to, in spite of prejudice. He was excited about life and he took chances.

A genius ahead of his time and gone too soon.

The 70 Year Old KING, WON An OSCAR!

We gave away 40 tickets to the Godzilla Minus One premiere - Polygon

In 2024 the King of the monsters not only turned 70 years, but also WON the OSCAR for GODZILLA MINUS ONE  Now, director Takashi Yamazaki can claim the title of Japan’s first ever winner of the Best Visual Effects Oscar. Even more, this is the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar, period.

Even more impressive is that this exceptional monster and its surrounding destruction were all achieved on a production budget of $15 million far, far lower than any of the other films in this category.

Godzilla Minus One was impressively up against other nominees including The Creator ($80 millions), Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning ($291 millions), Napoleon ($200 millions) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. ($250 millions).
